Thirty spokes meet in the hub, but the empty space between them is the essence of the wheel
Lao Tse

What maketh an object? Is it the inherent physical mass, or the negative space framing the object?

In essence the work is an experiment focusing on a simultaneous awareness of form and non-form. In another format it can be compared to silence in music. You must have one, to create the other, and it is this rhythmic interval that produces a balanced composition.

The longer you focus on the negative space, the clearer the object becomes. One is worthless without the other, and if one lacks form and balance, the other is consigned to a similar destiny.

The installation was used to highlight our world of haves & have-nots. The convex dome representing the physical mass of wealth, food & education, whilst the inverted concave dome is the perfect negative mould representing a space that does not exist and a world where there are none of the basic provisions in life.
